Part IV

“It’s a restructuring of the Empire a la 1980s economic restructuring, a la World War II 1944, Bretton Woods, a la 1917-18. The Empire goes through these periodic restructurings. It changes the mix of its economic policies. It forges new political institutions global, and that’s how you must see what’s going on!”
– Dr. Jack Rasmus, from this week’s interview

Earlier this week, the entire world was gazing on the island of Greenland. [1]
A land mass on the Arctic, and three times the size of Texas, it has a population of roughly 56,000. [2]
So why was the entire world watching with an interest in Greenland’s March 11 elections like never before?
Quite simply, Greenland was one of the areas targeted by U.S. President Donald Trump that he was aiming to get “one way or another.” [3]
The other places on his special list of “must haves” apparently were the Panama Canal and Canada (as the 51st State.) [4]
Additionally, the President Trump really departed from traditional diplomatic practice by humiliating the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in front of global media cameras. He was also pursuing peace with Russia, which while welcome in the eyes of some, signalled to allies in Europe that he would cut them adrift and leave them fighting the war alone.[5][6]
The foreign policy practice of the Trump administration in just the first two months of his administration is really unlike anything the people he serves have seen in decades, if ever. This has some people wondering if he is a barbarian or has lost his mind. [7]
But there is a train of thinking that contemplates that the radical moves that he has made are for a reason. And while it is valid to question his approach, the key objectives should be brought out on the table and examined carefully before we tar him with the usual intemperate political slogans.
We may discover that moves of some kind are rationalized by the need to stop the Empire the U.S. has been building for 250 years is coming apart, the great republic is in serious decline, and that something drastic had to be done to rescue the Empire from reversible decline. We may also discover that Trump is only willing to take the humanitarian mask off of the kind of imperial activity that past presidents, Democratic and Republican have always practised. We endeavour to explore the new desperation phase of Trump/MAGA international activity on this next chapter of the Global Research News Hour.
In our first half hour, we speak with U.S. born author and journalist Ron Ridenour, now based in Denmark, about the results of the recent Greenland election, how the result was impacted by Trump’s threat of annexation, and how it impacted Demark which currently holds the island as a province. And in our second half hour, Dr. Jack Rasmus joins us and explains his position that these policies are merely the latest in a series of attempts to restructure the American Empire. Rasmus also talks about the role of financial elites like Musk in the equation. HE also talks about how Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, set to replace Justin Trudeau as the Prime Minister of Canada will fare in addressing economic war started between Trump’s America and its friendly neighbour to the north.
Ron Ridenour is a U.S.-born author and journalist, anti-war and civil rights activist since 1961. After joining the U.S. Air Force at 17, he saw the inner workings of U.S. imperialism first hand and resigned. In the 1980s and 1990’s he worked with the Nicaraguan government and on Cuban national media.
He now lives in Denmark and, in addition to writing a dozen books, has served as a special correspondent and freelance investigative journalist for many publications in the U.S. and several Latin American and European countries. Ron can be reached at ronrorama@gmail.com.
Dr. Jack Rasmus is author of the books, ‘Central Bankers at the End of Their Ropes’, Clarity Press, 2017 and ‘Alexander Hamilton and the Origins of the Fed’, Lexington Books, 2020.
