US President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union and Mexico with new tariffs, evoking sharp criticism from Washington's trading partners.
Trump said on Saturday that he would slap 30 percent tariffs on goods from the EU and Mexico as of August 1.
He also threatened to impose further tariffs on Europe if it retaliated.
Trump said to the Europeans that they would pay the price if they decided on retaliation.
“If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs and retaliate, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 30 percent that we charge,” he wrote in a letter to the EU.
He also rebuked the Mexicans for not making a hard enough effort to stop the flow of illegal drugs into North America, turning it into what he described as a “Narco-Trafficking Playground" for Mexico
In response, Brussels and Mexico City expressed disappointment over Trump's threat to impose 30 percent tariffs on their imports from the start of the month.
The Mexicans called Trump's tariff increase an "unfair deal". EU chief Ursula von der Leyen threatened to take "proportionate countermeasures" if necessary. Both sides said they wanted their trade negotiations with the US to continue.
Meanwhile, Trump this week also announced his new tariffs on goods from Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil starting next month.
Trump has warned all of the US's international trading partners that he would impose even higher tariffs on imports if any of them decided to retaliate.
