Closely related to the concept of “Manufactured Consent” and of equal importance, would be what Prof. Chossudovsky calls “Manufacture dissent”. He explains,
“under contemporary capitalism, the illusion of democracy must prevail. It is in the interest of the corporate elites to accept dissent and protest as a feature of the system inasmuch as they do not threaten the established social order. The purpose is not to repress dissent, but, on the contrary, to shape and mould the protest movement, to set the outer limits of dissent.” (1)
Dissent fabrication is in full view today when writers and activists fail to attribute the catastrophe that is Syria directly to Empire’s Regime Change Operation (a success). They are unwittingly falling into the trap of disassociating Empire from its crimes. Worse, when they ask Empire to help solve the catastrophe (that Empire itself created) they are further enabling Empire’s crimes, tacitly giving it consent for further “interventions”.
Similarly, when they fail to address the fundamental Big Lie of the “Global War on Terrorism” they are sometimes unwittingly empowering Empire’s War Lies. To be clear, the Global War on Terrorism is a War Lie and pretext for global war in support of terrorism. But this fact is seemingly omitted from dissenting voices. (2)
Empire’s Regime Change on Syria resulted purposely in the installation of al Qaeda/HST as a junta regime which will continue to serve US, Zionist, and assorted imperialist interests to the detriment of what used to be Syria. The current genocide against Alawites and minorities is a bitter but very predicable fruit of this Regime Change war. (3)
Notice too that the countries that Empire has predictably destroyed, almost on schedule, were previously secular governments that opposed al Qaeda. The list includes the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and now Syria. Yemen is a work in progress. Former General Westley Clark detailed a partial list here.
The Lie of the Global War on Terrorism and the disassociation of Empire from its crimes is enabled by widespread censorship. Recently, for example, American citizen, author, lawyer, activist, Dan Kovalik announced that he risks being detained or arrested in the U.S if he goes to Yemen. Why? Because he reports truthfully.
Similarly, students in the US now risk deportation if they write truthfully about Empire’s crimes, in particular its complicity in the genocide against Palestinians.
But well-paid Legacy Media Press stenographers who amplify criminal war propaganda and sell devastating wars are highly rewarded. On the one hand, consent is fabricated through their framing of war narratives, and on the other, acceptable frameworks for dissent are established which invariably omit fundamental issues such as the fraud of the Global War on Terrorism.
Some, maybe most of these Western reporters selling Pentagon scripts are credibly accused war criminals.
International lawyer Christopher Black notes that,
“The Nuremberg principle that propaganda inciting aggressive war is a crime was codified in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1966.
Article 20 states,
‘1. Any propaganda for war shall be prohibited by law.
2. Any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence shall be prohibited by law.’
It was also included in Article 15 of the American Convention on Human Rights of 1969 that uses similar language. It is telling that both Canada and the United States, two of the worst offenders in the use of war propaganda, have refused to ratify the Convention, but this should not surprise us.” (4)
There is nothing democratic or free about any of this. It is totalitarian. And the fruits of this sickness are the genocides now occurring in Gaza and Syria, the Ukraine war, the war on Yemen, and on and on.
Legacy media war propaganda should be confronted. Dissent must expand to include and expose fundamental War Lies and deceptions. It must expose the lies and crimes of Empire.
