“We live in a dangerous age. There is no need to describe the serious nature of the threats we face. Or the devastating consequences we will endure if those threats materialise. The real question before us is whether Europe is prepared to act as decisively as the situation demands. In the various meetings in recent weeks, the response from European capitals has been as resounding as it has been clear. We are in an era of rearmament. And Europe is ready to increase defence spending massively.”
Thus the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced Europe’s rearmament plan to invest public money – subtracted from social spending – to the tune of 800 billion euros to make Europe “secure and resilient”. Prime Minister Meloni, grasping at straws after endorsing Ursula von der Leyen’s plan, objected:
“Rearmament is not an appropriate word, we risk giving an unclear message”.
French President, Emmanuel Macron, is clarifying the situation:
“Russia’s aggressive attitude seems to know no bounds after it invaded Ukraine. Russia is a threat to France and Europe at the moment I am speaking to you and for years to come. Who can believe that Russia will stop at Ukraine? Russia has become a threat to France and Europe. It would be madness to remain a spectator in such a dangerous world.”
Macron then announced his intention to extend France’s nuclear deterrent to partner countries as well.
Macron’s offer to “extend the nuclear umbrella to other European nations” is described by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk as “very promising“. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, on the other hand, warns that Moscow sees President Emmanuel Macron’s statement on extending the French nuclear deterrent to European partners as “a threat to Russia“.
Indeed, Macron’s plan, if implemented, would create a very dangerous situation: France could deploy nuclear weapons against Russia in any other European country: in fact, the category of ‘European partners‘ is very vague and could include the Baltic countries close to Russia, and Ukraine itself, which would be equipped with de facto nuclear weapons aimed at Russia. Macron also announced “the possibility of sending European troops to Ukraine to enforce a peace agreement“. Such troops would actually have the function of keeping the Ukrainian-Russian border area in constant tension by sabotaging any US-Russian agreement that would end the war.
