A Moment of Civilizational and Institutional Crisis in U.S. History: Address to Civil Servants and the Military. Emanuel Pastreich

Global Research, February 06, 2025

Dear Friends:

I want to make a clear and unmistakable declaration on this critical day in American history. As we watch the unravelling of American institutions and the gathering threat around the world of a new dark age of barbarism, we sense with growing urgency that something must be done. But to do just anything, to just do what the television tells us to do, is to fall back into the swamp of despair.

I assert that the United States of America is a republic and that elected officials, civil servants, judges and prosecutors, officers and diplomats, are duty bound to our nation’s Constitution, and by extension to the citizens of the United States. We follow no other orders and we hear no other master’s voice.

If we do not follow the Constitution, if we report to private equity, to the strategic teams of multi-billionaires hidden behind AI masks, or to other shadowy contrived and fake “governments for hire,” if we cannot follow the simple description of what the United States of America is that is presented in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution, a definition that defines what our nation is, and what it is not, what government is, and what it is not, then we have no role to play at all.

We serve the people, our equals, and we join with them, hand and hand, side by side, in the fight for democracy, for justice, and for an egalitarian society. We do not make up threats or contrive crises to line the pockets of the rich and powerful. We do not support the conspiracies and falsehoods that are propagated to mislead our people.

The truth, my brothers and sisters, goes marching on!

The time-honored Declaration of Independence, which defines the United States of America as distinct and separate from the British Empire, states clearly,

“When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce the citizens under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.”

We are bound by duty, by our offices, and by our consciences, to uphold that vision for the potential of humanity that is engraved in the foundations of our nation, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Without them, the titles and facades that awe are meaningless and reduced to a dark shadow of the United States of America. We must rather join with our fellow citizens to provide “new guards for our future security.”

Respectfully,

Emanuel Pastreich
